ADB Approves Technical Assistance Grant for the Nam Theun 2 Project

This is the second TA grant that the ADB has provided the Government of Laos for preparatory work on the Nam Theun 2 project

On March 29th the ADB approved a Project Preparatory Technical Assistance (PPTA) grant of US $1,000,000.00 to the government of Laos for preparatory work on the Nam Theun 2 project. This is the second TA grant the ADB has approved for this project. The following is a brief description of the PPTA:

Objectives and Scope

The objectives of the TA is to undertake the second phase of the preparatory work for the Nam Theun II Hydropower Development Project (NT2 Project). The scope of the TA will include:

  1. incorporation of the findings of the Phase I Technical Assistance (PPTA No. 4213-LAO: GMS Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Development Project);
  2. confirmation of specific aspects of the economic and financial viability and integrating the results of the social and environmental benefit-cost analysis;
  3. assessment of the macroeconomic impacts of the NT2 Project;
  4. implementation of the short-and medium-term capacity building program for effective mitigation of social and environmental impacts being developed under PPTA 4213-LAO;
  5. supporting the Lao Government's initiatives for communication with the project-affected people;
  6. facilitation of project coordination and management; and
  7. facilitation of effective consultation/participation with various stakeholders including local and international non-government agencies.
