Critics in civil society have pointed out that the IFI pressure on client countries to liberalize trade on a unilateral basis, through legislative and regulatory changes, may potentially undermine these countries' efforts to collectively resist multilateral liberalization at the WTO. Civil society organizations around the world are involved in monitoring trade related reforms and the role of the IFIs in promoting the adoption of contested measures in borrowing countries. Research, analysis and reports produced by Northern and Southern groups outline concerns of those impacted by trade liberalization and offer direction for future advocacy work.
