يقوم البنك الدولي حاليا بإعداد مذكرة الإستراتيجية الانتقالية لتونس التي ستحدد إطار عمل البنك في البلد خلال السنوات المالية 2012-2013 ولذلك يسعى البنك الى الحصول على ملاحظات وإسهامات المواطنين التي بامكانهم ارسالها عبر الإنترنت حتي مارس 2012.كونها مهد الربيع العربي الذي اجتاح منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال افريقيا، قد اظهرت تونس ان التنمية المتساوية لا يمكن ان تتحقق في غياب المشاركة والمساءلة. وبما أن البنك الدولي يلعب دورا مهما ليس فقط في مجال الإصلاحات الاقتصادية ولكن ايضا في مجال الإصلاحات المؤسسية واصلاح الحكم، تعتبر هذه المشاورة فرصة للمواطنين لأن يشاركوا في تشكيل المستقبل الإقتصادي والسياسي في تونس مع الامل ان تكون هناك فرص مماثلة في المستقبل.

القاهرة من الأساس تسأل: هل يكفي قرض البنك الدولي لمشروع وسائل النقل في مصر لحل المشكلة؟

يناقش نيكولاس هاميلتون من مدونة "القاهرة من الأساس" قرضا مقترحا للبنك الدولي تبلغ قيمته 250 مليون دولار أمريكي لتنفيذ مشروع كبير يستهدف وسائل النقل والمواصلات المصرية، وذلك فى إطار رؤية أشمل لاستراتيجية مستدامة لوسائل النقل والمواصلات بمنطقة القاهرة الكبرى. يُطلق على مشروع البنك المقترح "تطوير مرافق البنية الأساسية لقطاع النقل في المناطق الحضرية" ومن المقرر مناقشة القرض وعرضه على مجلس المديرين التنفيذيين بالبنك للموافقة في مطلع عام 2013.

قام برنامج الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا بمركز معلومات البنك بإعداد قائمة بالمشروعات التي يمولها البنك الدولي أو يحضر لتمويلها في مصر. تقدم القائمة وصفا مختصرا لكل مشروع، إضافة إلى رسم بياني يلخص طريقة سير دورة مشروعات البنك الدولي.

اليمن:
البنك الدولي يلغي التجميد على القروض والمنح لليمن
2012/23/1
اعلن البنك الدولي يوم 23 يناير 2012 انه سيعيد تأسيس وجوده في اليمن بعد ان كان قد علق مدفوعاته الى البلد لمدة ستة اشهر. ولكن هذا الوجود يزال محدودا؛ يقتصر سفر الموظفين الى صنعاء على البعثات الضرورية ويتم تنفيذ الكثير من العمل المتعلق باليمن في مكتبي البنك الدولي في عمان والقاهرة. سيقوم البنك ايضا باعادة تقييم الوضع الامني بعد الانتخابات المقررة في فبراير في اليمن.

برنامج الشرق الاوسط وشمال افريقيا اصبح اول برنامج بمركز معلومات البنك ليدخل عالم وسائل الاعلام الاجتماعي مع حضوره على تويتر. ننشر اخبار ومقالات مهمة عن عمل المؤسسات الدولية وكذلك عن عمل المجتمع المدني بالمنطقة.

برنامج الشرق الاوسط وشمال افريقيا في مركز معلومات البنك يرحب بكايتلن غلاغر كمساعدة برنامج
انضمت كايتلن الى فريق مركز معلومات البنك في سبتمبر عام 2011. تخرجت كايتلن من جامعة ماريلاند مع شهادة في العلوم السياسية وشهادة اخرى في دراسات عربية مع التخصص في مجال دراسات الشرق الأوسط. أمضت كايتلن السنة الاخيرة من دراساتها في مصر والمغرب حيث تعلمت اللغة العربية وكانت هذه التجربة فريدة من نوعها لأنها كانت خلال اندلاع الربيع العربي.
في مركز معلومات البنك, كايتلن ستعمل في مجالي المجتمع والاقتصاد والنضال من أجل العدالة الاقتصادية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. لدى كايتلن خبرة في قضايا الاقتصاد السياسي والعدالة من خلال عملها التدريبي مع مؤسسة الدراسات السياسية في العاصمة واشنطن وايضا من خلال عملها التدريبي مع جمعية كاريتاس في مدينة الاسكندرية في مصر.

1. Spotlight: The World Bank Group and Lebanon: A country study

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Program at the Bank Information Center has published an in-depth country study on the role of the World Bank Group in Lebanon. The study discusses the recent involvement of the Bank in Lebanon such as during the reconstruction phase following the 2006 war and during the political crisis that paralyzed the country between 2006 and 2008. It also discusses the Bank’s current strategy for Lebanon and its portfolio of public and private sector investments in the country. In addition to providing information on the Bank’s role in Lebanon, the study takes a critical position on some of the Bank’s policies and activities in the country such as its push for privatization of public utilities in the aftermath of the 2006 war and its current strategy for Lebanon which lacks concrete solutions for poverty concentration in the North and South. Moreover, the study provides civil society and affected communities with information and tools to allow them to influence the Bank and hold it accountable to its development commitments and push for more transparency in development decisions overall. The study is a useful tool for civil society as well as a broader audience including academics, practitioners, students, donors and anyone interested in the World Bank’s work in Lebanon.
The study is currently only available in English, but is being translated and will be available in Arabic soon.

2. Spotlight: The World Bank seeks Tunisian citizens’ input on its new strategy for the country

As the World Bank prepares its upcoming Interim Strategy Note for Tunisia - which will outline its engagement in the country for 2012-2013 - it is seeking citizens’ input and feedback which they can submit online through March 2012. As the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to spark the Arab Spring, Tunisia has shown that equitable development cannot take place in the absence of participation and accountability. With the World Bank playing a role not only in economic reforms but also in the areas of institutional and governance reforms, this consultation is one of hopefully several opportunities for citizens to play a role in shaping the economic and political future of Tunisia.

Cairo From Below on World Bank's proposed loan for Egyptian transportation project: Is it enough?

Nicholas Hamilton of the blog Cairo From Below discusses a proposed World Bank loan of $250 million for a major Egyptian transportation project, in the broader context of envisioning a sustainable transport strategy for the Greater Cairo Region. The Bank's proposed project is called the Urban Transport Infrastructure Development and is scheduled to be approved by the Bank's Board of Directors in early 2013.

Yemen
World Bank Lifts Suspension on All Credits and Grants to Yemen

The World Bank announced on January 23rd, 2012 that it would be re-establishing a presence in Yemen after several months of suspended disbursements to the country. The re-engagement is limited however; staff travel to Sana'a is restricted to essential missions, with much of the work continuing to be done out of the Bank's Amman and Cairo offices. A reassessment of the security situation will be done after Yemen's scheduled elections in February.

BIC/MENA welcomes Katelyn Gallagher as Program Assistant
Katelyn joined the Bank Information Center in September 2011. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with degrees in Arabic Studies and Government and Politics and a minor in Middle East Studies. Katelyn spent the final year of her undergraduate career in Egypt and Morocco, studying Arabic and living through the Arab Spring. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to combine two passions through her work and research at BIC in the political economy of the Middle East. She has previously worked on political economy and justice issues as an intern with the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, and also interned in Egypt with Caritas Alexandria, working on microfinance.
