Introduction

The Multimodal North Amazon axis is one of largest infrastructure works in Peru. Its purpose is to connect the Peruvian northern coast with the state of Amazonas in Brazil, through a highway and waterways of the Huallaga and Marañon.

Main works planned for the axis are: improvement of road infrastructure between the seaport Paita and port Yurimaguas; modernisation of both ports and Iquitos, port of the Amazon and city of the Peruvian Amazon with which only exists air and river communications; the construction of logistic centers in Yurimaguas and Iquitos to support vessels and handle greater loads ; and improvement of the waterways of the Huallaga and Marañón to make possible the flow without obstacles of larger vessels.

The Multimodal North Amazon Axis seeks facilitate communication between this area of Peru to the South and Southeast region Ecuador and to promote the interconnection of the interior of the continent with the basin of the Pacific.

The Multimodal North Amazon axis project has been classified as Group 3 (access to the waterway of the Huallaga - Marañón) axis Amazon of IIRSA.
