Introduction
Overall, the project consists of enabling a land route capable of carrying large amounts of cargo from the port of Manta, located in the coastal province of Manabi, to a transfer port located in the Amazonian province of Orellana. From Orellana the goods can be loaded onto ships that cross the Ecuatorian Amazon through the Napo River and go to the port of Nuevo Rocafuerte, on the border of Peru. The cargo is then taken to Manaus and later to Belém, a city in the Brazilian state of Pará.
The Manta -Manaos project has been included within the portfolio of projects of the IIRS (Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South) as part of the Group 2 projects in the Amazon Axis, and was called "Access Waterway to the Napo.”

Project Goals
The main objective of this project is to build a transportation corridor that integrates the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing the carrying capacity of the Amazon basin through the Amazon River system. In addition to the transportation through the rivers, roads, railways, river and sea ports, airports, transfer stations and border crossings are included in the project.
The Manta- Manaus route is considered an alternative to the Panama Canal for boats that use this passage way for crossing the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This route has an average waiting time of 45 days, while Manta -Manaos reduce that time to 15 days.
The Route of the Manta-Manaos Axis in Ecuador:
The Manta -Manaos axis is a multi-modal route, which implies the confluence of several means of transport, by land, by air and through rivers. The following is a brief description of the route of this axis in Ecuador.
The land of the Manta- Manaus is about 578 km , while the waterway is estimated at 861 km, of which 240 km through the territory of Ecuador , from Puerto Francisco de Orellana to the port of New Rocafuerte in the border with Peru.
