Wolfowitz Watch

Paul Wolfowitz was confirmed as President of the World Bank by the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on March 31, 2005. Wolfowitz’s confirmation followed a selection process criticized by many as opaque, undemocratic and inappropriately dominated by the United States.

Paul Wolfowitz

The new President’s appointment raises important questions about the future trajectory of the World Bank Group, and suggests a narrowing convergence between U.S. geopolitical interests and the operations of the international financial institutions (IFIs). At a time when the international role of the United States is increasingly questioned, the nomination of such a controversial figure is indeed striking.

BIC has specifically dedicated this webpage to monitoring Paul Wolfowitz’s presidency. The page is intended to inform individuals, civil society organizations and the media, by providing facts and linking to analysis on President Wolfowitz's appointments, speeches and travel schedule. BIC’s intention is to help the public both monitor President Wolfowitz's decisions and interpret their significance.

Get Involved! Contributions Welcome As this page is intended to spark discussion and analysis of the new president's decisions, the Bank Information Center welcomes contributions and tips from civil society groups, academics, the media and members of the public. We are especially grateful for correspondence and assistance from World Bank employees. All sources are guaranteed anonymity.
