South Asia Regional Coordinator, Asia Program

The Bank Information Center (BIC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that aims to empower citizens in developing countries to influence World Bank and other Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) activities in a manner that fosters social justice and ecological sustainability. BIC is seeking a South Asia Regional Coordinator for its Asia Program.

This announcement is for a 2 year, full-time, renewable contract. The position will be based in New Delhi, India with significant travel across the region.

BIC has strategic partnerships with NGOs throughout the region, and a key component of the program is to strengthen our work with South Asian civil society. BIC intends to support local, national, and regional organizations though information on and analysis of development policies and projects financed by International Financial Institutions (IFIs). BIC’s Asia Program activities focus primarily on the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank Group (including the International Finance Corporation).

Principal Responsibilities:

  • The South Asia Regional Coordinator will manage an office and staff in Delhi and consultants in multiple locations. S/he will provide leadership for BIC’s work in the region by:
  • Strengthening existing and developing new relationships with civil society organizations in the region.
  • Providing timely information and analytical support to civil society organizations in South Asia on the role and activities of the MDBs. S/he will
  • Conduct outreach activities in-country that will allow BIC to deepen its understanding of the range of actors interested in MDB activities in the region
  • Act as an information resource to groups in the region in order to help them understand and influence MDB activities in their country
  • Produce analytical briefings and country updates on a periodic basis
  • Provide in-country training and on-going advocacy support to strengthen the ability of CSOs in the region to influence IFI projects and policies effectively
  • Responding to requests for information about MDB projects and policies in the region, from NGOs, academics, policy makers, and the press; and proactively provide key information to them.
  • Monitoring World Bank Group and ADB projects that are of significant environmental and social concern for affected groups in the region. Collaborate with BIC’s partners to influence MDB policies and strategies in the region, with an emphasis in the following areas: economic, social, and cultural rights; right to information and institutional transparency; accountability; citizen participation; and rights of indigenous peoples/tribals.
  • Developing relationships with MDB officials, especially at Resident Missions and facilitating the direct engagement of local organizations with these institutions (if so requested)
  • Supporting the Asia Program Manager in fundraising for the regional program by assisting in proposal and grant report writing.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social change
  • Advanced degree in relevant social science field such as political science, sociology, environmental science, economics, etc.
  • At least 7 years of experience in the development or environment fields working for, or collaborating with, NGOs or social movements in South Asia
  • At least 5 years of staff and office management experience
  • Thorough understanding of international development issues and specifically the role and activities of International Financial Institutions (e.g. World Bank, Asian Development Bank)
  • Excellent research, analytical and writing skills
  • Fluency in Hindi and/or Urdu is essential and the ability to communicate in Bengali is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% of the time in the region (and periodically to the United States and elsewhere in Asia)

Time Period: Two-year term from date of contract. Contract renewal will be contingent on performance.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be competitive for a senior position in similar NGOs in the region. BIC offers a generous paid leave policy and other benefits. A separate budget will be provided for travel and operational expenses.

Part-time Admin/Finance Assistant for BIC's Delhi-based South Asia Office

Bank Information Center (BIC) partners with civil society in developing and transition countries to influence the World Bank and other international financial institutions (IFIs) to promote social and economic justice and ecological sustainability. BIC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that advocates for the protection of rights, participation, transparency, and public accountability in the governance and operations of the World Bank, regional development banks, and IMF.
BIC is seeking a part-time Admin/Finance Assistant for its Delhi-based South Asia Office.

The South Asia Office focuses on the World Bank Group (including the International Finance Corporation) and the Asian Development Bank. BIC has strategic partnerships with non-governmental organizations throughout the region, and a key component of the program is to strengthen civil society capacity for informed engagement on development issues in South Asia.

The Admin/Finance Assistant will report to the Regional Coordinator, South Asia.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day administrative and financial works of the office under the supervision of Regional Coordinator.
  • Maintain inventory of office assets, order supplies, and assist in official procurement.
  • Record BIC's daily expenses, maintain an organized copy of receipts, and produce quarterly expense statements in Excel.
  • Look after logistics requirements of the office, which may include travel, accommodation, and visa processing needs of BIC staff and official guests.
  • Assist the Regional Coordinator in official correspondence, and provide photocopy, fax, and mail support.
  • Maintain functionality of office equipment (computers, fax, phone, etc), and ensure office cleanliness and up-keep.
  • Manage office mini-library.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social change.
  • Graduate-level degree.
  • At least 1 year of experience in office administration & finance/accounting.
  • Well-versed in Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with Tally (or any accounting software) and prior knowledge of library maintenance will be an asset.

Time Period: 1 year (15 hours a week).

Salary and Benefits: INR 55,000 to 60,000 per annum (commensurate with experience). BIC offers a friendly work atmosphere in an international team and competitive vacation benefits.

Internship Opportunities

Latin America Program Fall Internship

Description:

The Latin America Program Intern will work with BICECA Program Manager and DC Project Coordinator to provide support to our partners in Latin America and to strengthen our ability to work with and support civil society in the region. The Latin American regional work focuses on the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and World Bank Group (including the International Finance Corporation) and other regional development banks (Bndes, CAF, FONPLATA). Special attention is given to the role of MDBs in regional integration initiatives (IIRSA in particular). Some tasks associated with this internship include: researching MDB activities in Latin America and preparing written updates and reports; doing in-depth project research for our project database; providing logistical support for partners visiting Washington; assisting in general program operations; occasional translation; and helping with the maintenance of BIC's website with the work of the Latin America program.

The Latin America Program Intern should possess excellent analytical and writing abilities. The intern should have demonstrated research skills and an interest in social justice issues. We are looking for someone who is flexible and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent English and Spanish spoken and written language skills are essential. We are accepting applications for full-time or part-time 6 month period (preference will be given for full-time interest but please specify). This is a paid internship.

The internship is full time (40 hours a week). The applicant should be able to start in the fall of 2006. This is a paid internship with a stipend of $1,000 monthly.
