Work on the stretch of the IIRSA Norte highway which runs from Paita, in Piura region, to Yurimaguas, in Loreto, is facing difficulties on some critical stretches, according to Peru's public transport regulator Ositran.
"These are new critical stretches that were not in the contract and the concessionaire is drawing up documents to resolve the difficulties. Once they are approved by the transport and communications ministry, they will be carried out immediately," Ositran president Juan Carlos Zevallos was quoted as saying by paper Gestión.
Meanwhile, the concessionaire is guaranteeing traffic flow on the highway, Zevallos said.
Works are being carried out by the consortium IIRSA Norte, which is comprised of Brazil's Odebrecht (49.8%) and Andrade Gutierrez (40%), and Peru's Graña y Montero (10.2%).
The 955km Interoceánica Norte highway project is designed to connect regions San Martín, Amazonas, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura and Loreto, and from there to Brazil.
