Brazil and BNDES: The Threat of Development for the Amazon

In this month's bulletin, we examine some of the concerns about whether the Bank’s and the Brazilian government’s policies address climate change issues and the social and environmental impacts of these projects.

Monthly Bulletin BICECA - Building Informed Civic Engagement for Conservation in the Andes-Amazon – A Project of the Bank Information Center (BIC)

In this edition, you will find the articles, “World Bank Environmental Development Policy Loan to BNDES: Moving Money or Mainstreaming Environment?", that examines the new relationship between the World Bank and the Brazilian Government with respect to a new $1.3 billion environmental Development Policy Loan and its implications for the climate change debate.  Also, "Amazon Dieback" is an article by Christian Velásquez-Donaldson that gives an update on a two year investigation by the World Bank on the probability and timing of the collapse of the Amazon biome due to global and local factors.   "Amazon in Peril: Dams Threaten Rainforest Biodiversity", is an article by Glenn Switkes of International Rivers that addresses the negative impacts of new hydroelectric dams planned for the Amazon basin in the Brazilian 10 year energy plan.  Finally,  “Eficiência Económica: Riscos e Custos Ambientais da Reconstrução da Rodovia BR-319” synthesizes the results fo a study by Leonardo Fleck of Conservation Strategy Fund regarding the costs and benefits of reconstructing a large segment of the BR 319 highway between Manaos and Puerto Velho.
