Ms. Eimi Watanabe, a Japanese national, will replace Mr. Werner Kiene, whose term will expire on October 31, 2009.

The World Bank announced on Monday that it has selected Ms. Eimi Watanabe as the newest member of its Inspection Panel. Ms. Watanabe, a Japanese national, will replace Mr. Werner Kiene, whose term will expire on October 31, 2009.

Established in 1993, the Inspection Panel is a three-member body with a permanent secretariat, housed at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington, DC. The Panel receives and investigates eligible complaints from (any two or more) people who feel they have been or could be harmed by any activity financed by the World Bank (IDA or IBRD), because of a violation of the Bank’s own policies or procedures.

According to the World Bank's website, Ms. Watanabe brings more than thirty years of experience in the field of development to the Panel and a "strong track record of working collaboratively with governments, NGOs, and donor agencies." A sociologist by training, she has been "involved in a wide range of substantive areas including child health and nutrition, primary education, environment, governance, and migration." Prior to joining the Panel, she served as Assistant Secretary General and Director of the UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy and previously she was UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh, and UNICEF Representative in India.
