The Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society (JACSES) and Friends of the Earth Japan have released a joint set of recommendations to the IFC for the ongoing review of their Policy on Social and Environmental Stability and the Policy on Disclosure of Information
The eleven recommendations straightforwardly lay out specific ways the policies, which include the Performance Standards, can be changed in order to effect better protection for affected communities as well as the rationale behind these suggestions. The recommendations were put together based on comparisons with the regulations used by other Multilateral Development Banks, as well as looking at some specific IFC projects that have raised issues about the current Policy. The cases this report looks at are Bertin LTDA in Brazil, Bujugali Energy Ltd. in Uganda, the Lanco Amarkantak coal power plant in India, and Wilmar's palm oil operations in Indonesia.
