Participants at this consultation again raised problems with the format of discussion, and how it limits the ability of civil society to effectively give feedback. Policy topics included contracts transparency, the need for buffer zones to promote community health and safety, supply chains, and development outcomes.

This consultation focused on climate change concerns, disclosure, and grievance mechanisms. Some common concerns were reliance on the client identification of risks, as well as the generally interpretive nature of the Performance Standards.

The Washington, D.C. consultation featured a large variety of civil society organizations, bringing many different concerns to the table. Some issues raised include the role of financial intermediaries, the means of measuring broad community support, a variety of environmental topics, and a number of issues related to disclosure

The main issues raised by BIC partners during discussions were the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of local communities and indigenous peoples, information disclosure, and outreach to affected communities, contract transparency, and the incorporation of deforestation and overuse of water (surface and underground water) into the IFC policy portfolio for proper consideration in regard to climate change.

Bogotá, Colombia

BIC partners who attended the Bogota consultation recommended a less general format for future sessions so that critical social and environmental issues could be better addressed. The main requests from CSOs were for greater contract transparency for all types of projects, increased outreach to affected communities, and clearer definition and reporting on success indicators depending on the size of the project, the company and the community affected.
