The completed 535km stretch connects San Juan de Marcona in Ica region with Chalhuanca in Apurimac region, reducing travel time between the two cities by 1.5 hours.

Consortium Interoceanica Tramo 1, comprised of firms Graña y Montero, JJC and Ingenieros Civiles y Contratistas Generales, was awarded a contract to perform the works in August 2007, BNamericas reported previously.
The 2,600km Interoceanica Sur highway, also known as IIRSA Sur, includes stretches in regions Madre de Dios, Cuzco, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Puno, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna.
