At G8 Summit, civil society demands follow-through on commitments
7 June 2004
Representatives of prominent African NGOs and trade unions have called upon the G8 to take action on their unfulfilled promises to address the debt, trade and HIV/AIDS issues. Transparency network calls for more disclosure.
In preparation for the 2004 G8 summit, to be held June 8-10 at Sea Island in the United States, representatives of prominent African NGOs and trade unions have called upon the G8 to take action on their unfulfilled promises to address the debt, trade and HIV/AIDS issues that undermine Africa’s economic and social development. In particular, African civil society urges the G8 to broaden the currently narrow scope of the HIPC (Highly Indebted Poor Countries) initiative; to remedy the existing inequalities in the international trading system; and to facilitate access to medication required for combating HIV/AIDS and other fatal diseases. African civil society is also requesting greater support from the G8 for African institutions that deepen democracy on the continent.
