Karachaganak denied licensing due to environmental violations

The IFC-funded Karachaganak Petroleum Operating has become the worldwide record holder for environmental fines, and has been denied licensing by the government of Kazakhstan.

Crude Accountability’s staff has just returned from a trip to southern Russia and western Kazakhstan to meet with the various players in this story—affected community members, KPO, and government representatives. In Russia’s Orenburg Oblast, where local media and government agencies have reported negative environmental impacts from the Karachaganak Field, government officials offered support to Crude Accountability on this campaign.
