ADB Responds to Civil Society Letter Regarding Safeguard Policies Update

The Asian Development Bank acknowledged civil society recommendations for its Safeguard Policies update process and highlighted some important issues for the review.
On September 28th, 2005, the ADB responded to a letter from civil society that outlined a number of recommendations for the upcoming update of ADB safeguard policies. Mr. Albab Akanda, Principal Safeguard Specialist and Team Leader of the Safeguard Policy update, wrote that the ADB expects to post the approach paper in early October for a 90-day comment period. He also highlighted that the update process will include structured consultations with stakeholders during the first quarter of 2006. Further, Mr. Akanda added that a policy working paper will be made publicly available for a second 90-day consultation phase and that translations will be provided in the major languages associated with the consultation workshops. Also, both the working paper and the final draft policy paper (R-paper) will be disclosed at the same time they are sent to the Board.
