Confirmed: Roberto Danino to leave the World Bank

The senior vice president and general counsel's resignation was effective January 31.

In an email to World Bank staff, Paul Wolfowitz credited Danino with "three main strategic priorities for Legal: client responsiveness; simplification and modernization of the Bank Group's legal documentation; and re-energizing legal advisory services, particularly in the area of justice reform under the Bankwide Legal Modernization Initiative."

Wolfowitz also noted that during Danino's tenure "Legal has made important policy contributions in the areas of human rights, extractive industries, indigenous peoples, use of country systems, development policy lending, sub-national finance, and debt relief, among many others."

Danino has previously served as both the Prime Minister of Peru (2001-2002) and the Peruvian Ambassador to the United States (2002-2003). He has also been a partner in the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, as well as Chairman of both the Latin American Practice Group and the Inter-American Development Bank's External Review Group for Private Sector Activities.

Ana Palacio, former Foreign Minister of Spain, is rumored to be his replacement.

BIC first posted rumors of Danino's resignation on January 13.
