Kristalina Georgieva has been selected by the World Bank as the new Director for Strategy and Operations in the Sustainable Development Vice-Presidency. This position was established in June by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz following the merger of the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Network and the Infrastructure Network.
Currently the World Bank's Country Director for Russia, one of Ms. Georgieva's main roles will be to, "assist the Sustainable Development Vice Presidency in moving forward on a common vision for sustainable development and in leading the operational alignment with this vision."
Of particular interest to observers will likely be the amount of influence Ms. Georgieva will bring to the new Network. Her title as Director for Strategy and Operations seems to suggest that either she will have an opportunity to mainstream environmental considerations across the largest operational unit at the World Bank or that the environment will take a backseat to lending and other internal management matters.
