President Wolfowitz fills position after Africa VP's resignation
World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz has reportedly appointed Mr. Hart Schafer, a German national and most recently the Director for Operations in the Africa Region, to take on the duties as Acting Vice President for the Africa Region at the Bank.
Schafer will take over from Mr. Gobind Nankani, who announced his resignation from the Bank in mid-November, becoming the "latest casualty" of Wolfowitz's leadership. Rumors at the Bank hold that that Wolfowitz considered Nankani ineffective as VP of the Bank's priority region.
Nankani was the second vice president to resign in the last few months, after the departure of the VP for the Middle East North Africa region, Christiaan Poortman. Mr. Poortman was also a 30-year veteran, and reportedly left over “differences with Wolfowitz and his advisors over issues including a plan to increase the number of international staff in Iraq.”
