Urgent concerns about Uganda dam go unanswered by World Bank
6 December 2006
An NGO letter to the World Bank details urgent concerns regarding the Bujagali hydropower project in Uganda, which is being fast-tracked for development early next year.
The World Bank has not responded to critical questions regarding the economic viability and environmental impacts of Bujagali, the effects of hydropower development on the health of Lake Victoria, and the transparency of key project documents, such as the Power Purchase Agreement between the government and dam developer. NGOs are concerned that project preparation is proceeding too quickly to properly analyze and publicly debate these issues, thereby compromising the selection of the best energy option to meet Uganda's needs.
