Svein Aass

Executive Director: Norway

Represents: Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden

Mr. Aass first served as the Alternate Executive Director from August 2004-June 2006, he was then elected as the Executive Director in July 2006.  His first experience at the World Bank was as the Assistant to the Nordic Executive Director from 1984-1986 and as the Advisor to the Nordic Executive Director from 1986-1989.   

He represented Norway as the Ambassador in Tehran, Iran from 1999-2002.  From 1994-1999, he was the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative for the Mission of Norway to the United nations in New York.  He served as the Ambassador and Special Advisor for Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo from 1993-1994. 

From 1992-1994 Mr. Aass was the Director of a NATO Pilot Study: "Cross-Border Military Related Pollution."  In 1989 until 1993 he was the Advisor/Division Chief at the Department of Natural Resources, Oil, and Nuclear Safety at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo.  Mr. Aass was the First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Norway to the OECD (DAC) and IEA in Paris, from 1981-1984.  From 1978-1981 he was the Second Secretary of the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.  In 1977 he served as an Attache to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo.  The previous year, 1976, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Agronomy, Norway.   

Svein has received a number of scholarships and fellowships.  In 1975 he was a Research Fellow at the Hedmark/Oppland Regional College in Hedmark, Norway.  That same year he also received a Dutch Government Scholarship for Development Economics at the University of Leiden in Leiden, the Netherlands.  From 1972-1973 he worked on a French Government Scholarship in Development Economics at Sorbonne in Paris, France.  He performed Agricultural Studies in Java, Indonesia from 1973-1974.  He was a Fulbright Scholar in Economics/Philosophy at Brandeis University outside Boston, Massachusetts from 1969-1970.

Mr. Aass was born in Oslo, Norway.  He studied Social Sciences at the University of Oslo from 1967-1969.  He holds an M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Oslo (1974).  In 1980 he received his Doctorat du 3eme cycle in Development Economics from the University of Paris IV.
