Monthly Operational Summary

A comprehensive listing of the World Bank's (IBRD/ IDA) entire portfolio of proposed projects.

Once per month.Obtain an electronic subscription by contacting the World Bank NGO Unit, care of Art Thomas. Email: , or fax 202-522-3247 (The Bank asks you to describe your group and its activities in your request.)

Project Information Document

A short (2-6 page) background summary of a proposed World Bank project.

Towards beginning of project cycle (at the end of the identification stage).World Bank Resident Missions/Field Offices (see contact list); World Bank Infoshop; on the web at www.worldbank.org.

Project Appraisal Document

The main technical document describing a loan for the Bank's Board prior to their vote on whether to approve or reject a project.

Following Board decision on project. Interested parties may want to ask project staff for draft PADs following the appraisal mission. World Bank/ Resident Missions/ Field Offices; World Bank Infoshop; Possibly at government ministries; on the web at www.worldbank.org.

Environmental Assessment

A complex document analyzing environmental impacts and alternatives; includes other project studies and reports, such as resettlement action plans. EA Summaries are also available.

Prior to the World Bank's project appraisal mission. Drafts of the EA and accompanying studies should be available to affected peoples, by requesting them from the project staff/resident field mission/ or government.World Bank/ Resident Missions /Field Offices; World Bank Infoshop; Possibly at government ministries.

Environmental Data Sheets (EDS)

Summary information on the environmental impacts of a proposed project; describes the studies that are to be done to address the issues raised.

Should be available as part of the environmental assessments in Category A projects, and in environmental analyses in Category B projects.Full text available on the web at www.worldbank.org; Updated quarterly in the MOS for all projects in the IBRD/IDA lending program and available at the World Bank Infoshop.

Indigenous Peoples Development Plan

Prepared by the borrower when an investment project has significant affect on indigenous peoples. Includes culturally appropriate development plan, efforts to anticipate adverse trends and indigenous participation

Should be available as part of the environmental assessments in Category A projects, and in environmental analyses in Category B projects.

Draft available from project staff or resident mission. Final draft available from World Bank Infoshop.

Resettlement Plan

Contains detailed information about the resettlement of people who are being displaced as a result of a project.

Included in the EIAs for Category A projects and for the environmental analyses for Category B projects.Summarized in PAD and Memorandum and Recommendation of the President. Drafts are available from Task Managers and final copies are available from the World Bank Infoshop after the appraisal mission.

Social Assessment (SA)

Identifies key stakeholders and establishes framework for their participation in a project, assesses social impact of investment projects, designs effective social interventions, reflects gender and other social differences.

Gender Analysis

Although gender-specific research and analysis has not been a priority in projects, it is occasionally carried out in project preparation.

Factual and Technical Document

Factual technical documents refer to project-related technical information gathered or received by the Bank from agencies or consultants associated with the project and may include: prefeasibility studies, feasibility studies, site and soil investigations, detailed design studies, etc.

During project preparation requests can be made for Project or Sector Loan Documents containing factual technical information. Factual technical documents start becoming available during project design and planning.Project Task Manager. If you do not receive a timely response send your request directly to the Country Director in the relevant Country Department.

Country Economic Memoranda

Included under final Country Economic and Sector Work Reports, which include broad range of documents on borrower country economies and sectors.

After approval by the Board of Executive Directors, final Country Economic and Sector Work Reports should be available.

World Bank Infoshop; Field Offices (only have reports relevant to their country).

Poverty Assessment

Focuses on the poor; their reasons for being poor; their barriers to escaping poverty; and the Bank's strategy for poverty alleviation. Input into the Country Assistance Strategy.

Ongoing as part of Economic Sector work. World Bank Infoshop.

Country Assistance Strategy (CAS)

Bank document that determines lending levels, operations and economic and sector research.

Periodically. World Bank Infoshop; on the web at www.worldbank.org.

National Environmental Action Plan (NEAPs)

Describes the major environmental concerns of a country, identifies the principal causes of problems, and formulates policies and concrete action to deal with problems by the borrowing governments.

World Bank Policies (OPs, BPs, GPs)

Bank Instruments, Country Assistance Management, Lending Eligibility & Terms, Lending Policies: Sectoral (EA, EAPs, Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Property, Involuntary Resettlement, Poverty Reduction, etc.), Lending Policies: Economic & Financial, Lending Policies: Other, Bank/IDA, Project Cycle, External Resources Mobilization & Aid Coordination, Research, Operational Reports & Communication.
