A number of names have emerged as possible candidates to take over the reins of World Bank President if Wolfowitz is removed from his post.

- Ashraf Ghani, former Afghan Minister of Finance and World Bank veteran, currently the Chancellor of Kabul University
The Washington Post
- Robert Zoellick, former Deputy Secretary of state and US trade representative;
- Kemal Dervis, currently head of the UN Development Programme;
- Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary and President of Harvard, currently part-time managing director of D. E. Shaw & Co
The Economist
- Stan Fischer, Governor of the Bank of Israel, previously served at both the World Bank and IMF
The Guardian
- Trevor Manuel, South African Minister of Finance, is suggested by Kenneth Rogoff in an editorial yesterday.
