The only official nominee for the post of World Bank President, Robert Zoellick, recently concluded a two week tour of Africa, Europe and Latin America and commented on what it will take to steer the institution back on track.
The former US Trade Representative and Deputy Secretary of State embarked on a 'goodwill tour' two weeks ago in hopes of mending some of the relationships that were fractured during the scandal around Paul Wolfowitz and also in an attempt to garner support for his nomination.
At a press conference in Brasilia, Brazil Zoellick said that "My role as a potential CEO is to try to heal this institution, overcome some of the conflicts, the bruises, the wounding, the frustrations." In terms of shifting the focus of the World Bank back to its mission of fighting poverty, Zoellick noted that "there needs to be some humility too because we've seen the failure of many grand ideas."
