Robert Zoellick spoke to hundreds of World Bank employees on his first day at the job Monday. The Economic Times reported he was greeted by applause and high hopes from a staff demoralized by recent scandal.
Bringing the benefits of "sustainable globalization" to all nations is a major challenge facing the Bank, Mr. Zoellick said in an interview with a staff member following his public address.
Zoellick's term officially began Sunday and will last five years.
Former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz has been hired as a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, one of the nation's most influential and conservative think tanks.
Nigeria's Business Day commented yesterday: "We welcome Robert Zoellick as the new president of the World Bank. We urge him not to get enmeshed in compromising situations such as the one that consumed his predecessor. We also implore him to give more than the usual attention to Africa."
