Communities in Ghana appeal to Inspection Panel about Bank landfill project

The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) filed a request for inspection of the World Bank's Kwabenya landfill project in Accra, the capital of Ghana. They argued that the project would displace a significant portion of the Agyemankata community and cause health problems for residents, who were not adequately consulted.

The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) filed a complaint to the World Bank's Inspection Panel on behalf of Agyemankata community, regarding the Bank's Kwabenya landfill project in Accra, Ghana's capital. COHRE claims that residents were not meaningfully consulted on the details of the project, and were not involved in the drafting of the resettlement action plan. The requestors are concerned that the site of the planned landfill is too close to residential areas, which have grown since the design of the earlier UNDP sanitation initiative, on which the World Bank project builds.
