EBRD approves new policies
15 May 2008 | London
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved new Environmental and Social Policy as well as a Public Information Policy, a week before the EBRD Annual Meetings.
On May 12, 2008, the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) approved the Bank's new Environmental and Social Policy as well as a new Public Information Policy, one week before the EBRD's Annual Meetings in Kiev, Ukraine.
The new Environmental and Social Policy is an important departure from the 2003 Environmental Policy, especially with respect to social safeguards and information disclosure standards. The new Public Information Policy comes ahead of scheduled review in 2009 and similarly brings needed improvements to the previous policy.
Regrettably, however, a number of other issues raised by civil society organization have largely been unaddressed in the new policies. The EBRD has not made a second draft of the policies available to public, missing an opportunity for a meaningful consultation during the Annual Meeting.
