BIC supports efforts to promote responsible IFC policies that advance social and environmental justice and enable citizen participation in development processes.
The IFC adopted a new Policy on Disclosure of Information in February 2006. Because the IFC works with the private sector, most project documentation is kept from the public in the interest of maintaining "business confidentiality." For example, while all credit and loan agreements entered into by the World Bank become public documents available with the United Nations after project approval, comparable loan agreements and project contracts signed between the IFC and private sector clients are not publicly disclosed.
The IFC adopted some of the World Bank’s social and environmental policies in 1998. Since that time, several of the World Bank’s policies have undergone revisions, but those applied by the IFC have remained the same.
