The new President’s appointment raises important questions about the future trajectory of the World Bank Group, and suggests a narrowing convergence between U.S. geopolitical interests and the operations of the international financial institutions (IFIs). At a time when the international role of the United States is increasingly questioned, the nomination of such a controversial figure is indeed striking.
