Bulyanhulu Gold Mine Project

Location Tanzania

Controversy surrounding the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency's support for Kahama Gold Mine in Tanzania continues. In addition to allegations of forced evictions and killings, Tanzanian organizations have also criticized the mine's displacement of small scale miners and increasing environmental degradation. They claim that MIGA failed to carry out appropriate due diligence when considering a guarantee for the mine, and that communities are worse off since the gold mining operations have begun.

In response to a complaint filed in January 2002, the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman (CAO) for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and MIGA issued an assessment report in October 2002. This report attracted serious criticisms from civil society organizations in Tanzania and abroad. The complainant, the Lawyer's Environmental Action Team (LEAT) of Tanzania along with other international organizations condemned the CAO report and produced a lengthy response in December 2002. LEAT also presented oral testimonials and written submissions regarding problems with the Bulyanhulu project to the World Bank Group's Extractive Industries Review during the Africa Consultation Workshop in January 2003.
