Livaningo, a Mozambican environmental organization, and International Rivers Network have expressed concerns about the prospective construction of another dam on the Zambezi River. Although no commitments have been made yet, the Mozambican government has approached the European Investment Bank and the World Bank Group for financing to support the construction of the 100 meter Mphanda Nkuwa dam at an estimated cost of $2.5 billion. Consistent with recommendations by the World Commission on Dams, Livaningo asserts that detailed studies of the country's energy demand and alternative energy sources, as well as the social and environmental implications of the project, should be carried out before it proceeds. They are seeking a dialogue with government and potential sponsors about the proposed project.
