Sonia joined BIC in 2007 as Program Associate for the Europe and Central Asia Program.  Before joining BIC, she spent six months in The U.S. Virgin Islands, where she was working with The Nature Conservancy on local capacity building for a Marine Protected Area. Prior to this, she was a Research Fellow for Global Policy at The World Conservation Union (IUCN). For two years, her work at IUCN focused on mainstreaming environmental sustainability within the safeguards, policies and strategies of international financial institutions. Sonia received an M.A. in International Development Studies from The Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University; and holds a B.A. in International Affairs and a B.A. in Russian Language and Literature also from George Washington University. She is originally from Russia, is fluent in Russian and proficient in Portuguese languages.

Sonia’s work at BIC focuses on collaborating with regional civil society organizations to promote revenue transparency in the extractive industries and environmental and social accountability within the World Bank Group, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and The Asian Development Bank.
